Sometimes it’s a mental game

Today I completed the Run for Water 10 miler.  Yep, 10 miles not the more common 10K.  It’s not quite a half marathon but significantly longer than the 6.2 of the 10K.  I am coming off a bout with the flu (thanks Primrose preschoolers!) so my goal was to finish in a relatively slow time.  What I didn’t anticipate were the hills on the course.  It was a lot more challenging physically than I expected.  In comes the mental tenacity to finish no matter what.  I was feeling (relatively) good through 7 miles.  Apparently tackling all the hills and keeping on pace came back to get me in those last 3.  8 was miserable, 9 was decent and 10 was a mental challenge just to keep putting one foot in front of the other.  The good news - I finished and earned my piece of the magnet!  The bad news - I was over 5 minutes slower than my drop-dead-this-is-the-slowest-I-should-ever-go pace.  Hey - I could have stayed in bed, taking advantage of that extra hour instead of burning off 1400 calories.  ðŸ˜‰

Inner mile dialog

Mile 1-nice one - jogging along nicely with my new friend Rachel

Mile 2-a little slower but still good company

Mile 3-well that was a little steep

Mile 4-still moving good

Mile 5-halfway!  Might as well finish since it’s as far back as forward

Mile 6-holy hills but that one felt like it went by fast

Mile 7-phew still on pace and only steps behind the group I have been leapfrogging with

Mile 8-oh man, that one hurt.  Slightly off pace now

Mile 9-that was better and it’s not like going slow makes it less painful

Mile 9.1-crap, it seems like a long way to the end

Mile 9.5-oh bother.

Mile 9.8-Can’t even see the finish line - are they still there?

Mile 10-hallelujah, where’s the ice bath?

Mile 10.1-of course they put the Austin Distance Challenge tent at then end!  Ha!

Races Galore!

I am going out with a bang in 2018!  I have signed up for a LOT of races in the next 3 months - both to promote my new business and to get myself in shape.  Hopefully I'm still able to walk when the ball drops at midnight.  Plus I already have some races on my 2019 calendar too!

So...if you need me, check out the local park, gym treadmill, or catch me at one of the races :)

1 year later

Wow, what a difference a year makes.  We are living in Austin, TX which makes my head, heart, and soul happy.  No more surprise drop-ins, no more 8 months of rainy and grey weather, and a ton less stress.  There are so many other perks that will keep for another day.

It was 70 and sunny today.  I worked, we planted some flowers and shrubs, and I got a run in.  I also was fortunate enough to speak to some kids about my career.  Nothing makes me happier than sharing I am a software engineer with the next generation.  #ladyengineersrock :)

Batting 1.000

So life has been a little...chaotic lately.  Work has been unsettling, my health has been in the tank, and we are just crazy busy around here.  March is shaping up to be a monster - some good times and some...  It's supposed to be all about March Madness however I'm fairly certain I'm barely going to be able to watch any games this year.  We have uninvited family showing up, friends coming in for basketball games, family coming in for "spring break", and a shower in Austin.  Basically every single weekend of the NCAA tournament has people in our home (or we are away from home).

I am starting a new streak.  I am 1/1 in March - batting 1,000!  Here's to new streaks and better times...

Workout data - Wednesday:
  • 710 calories burned
  • 46 minutes spent moving my bottom
  • 11,614 steps taken
  • 6.05 miles covered

SW23

Serena Williams added major championship trophy number 23 to her case.  She now has the most major final championships in the Open era.  She is only one short of matching the all time record of 24, held by Margaret Court.  Serena won her record breaking trophy against her older sister, Venus in straight sets, 6-4. 6-4.  This Australian Open has been amazing; so many wonderful stories and some fantastic tennis.  I can't wait for the Federer/Nadal final!

On a personal note, this was a tough week for me.  Work has been particularly stressful and requiring a lot of hours.  I broke my daily run streak yesterday but started another one today.

NFL Conference Championship Round

Sadly the NFL games weren't really competitive.  The Super Bowl will pit the New England Patriots against the Atlanta Falcons.  Matt Ryan, quarterback for ATL, is playing at an extremely high level.  If he doesn't get the NFL MVP it will be a travesty.  I hope SB51 is a good, well contested game.  We'll see in two weeks.

Meanwhile I have been working all weekend - yuck!  Hopefully I'll get some time off soon.  I did manage to keep my workout streak alive, so that is something!

Workout data - Sunday:

  • 640 calories burned
  • 50 minutes spent moving my bottom
  • 10,462 steps taken
  • 5.26 miles covered

Workout data - Saturday:
  • 607 calories burned
  • 34 minutes spent moving my bottom
  • 9,542 steps taken
  • 4.67 miles covered

Workout data - Friday:
  • 891 calories burned
  • 74 minutes spent moving my bottom
  • 12,848 steps taken
  • 7.36 miles covered

Thank you!

The end is nigh and, I for one, wish I could extend my thanks to President Obama.  He may not have accomplished everything he hoped for eight years ago however his presidency was largely successful.  Our economy has recovered, unemployment is is lower than it has been in decades, and he set an example for all of us to follow.  He is a caring, sincere, eloquent, and good man.  We could all hope comport ourselves as well as he has under the extreme pressure of the leader of our nation.  He was under fire from the moment he was elected until the very last hours.  Time will tell us what his lasting legacy will be but I have all the information I need.  Thank you, President Obama.  Thank you for leading with dignity, class, and restraint.  Thank you for setting an example of how marriage and family life can be balanced and loving even while holding down a demanding and stressful career.  Just thank you for being you.

Speaking of work, back to mine...
